Unbeknownst to many lay persons, the first locksmiths where metal workers who designed and constructed locks and safes. Every generation after the initial group of locksmiths surfaced was trained to pick locks and crack open safes whenever necessary, though oddly enough, these individuals didn't commit crimes but instead went into business for themselves by becoming security specialists. These days the very best locksmiths are able to crack any lock whether it be old-fashioned or electronic. In fact so talented are modern-day locksmiths that they build, install, and monitor state-of-the-art security system for homes, cars, and businesses.
Whereas in years, decades, even centuries past a locksmiths worked primarily with safes and residential locks, modern locksmiths are quite different. Modern locksmiths usually run their business on a small commercial structure or storefront and it may seem that most of their business comes from having new keys made and selling new locks. The average garden-variety consumer may see a modern-day locksmiths as little more than a salesperson rather than a skilled technician who's capable of lock repair, safe cracking, or giving individuals emergency entrance into their vehicle or home. Locksmith will have no problem showing their quality however once they begin their work.
While in the past locksmiths would simply create keys, sell locks, and of course cracks safes, modern locksmiths often double or moonlight as security consultants. These particular locksmiths are far more than just your ordinary simple key cutters. In fact so talented are these individuals that they often work as both residential and commercial security consultants. Moreover these individuals have the skill to work with state-of-the-art security systems such as electrical locks, keyless entry ways, and a variety of other control systems designed to not only discourage intrusion but presented as well.
Though the average homeowner doesn't ever think about a locksmith until they have an emergency it behooves these people to seek out a locksmith not only for emergencies but for home and business protection as well. State-of-the-art security systems can be installed on not only commercial structures and storefronts but in residential homes as well. Many homeowners are also be pleasantly surprised when they learn that modern locksmiths are often far more affordable and competitively priced than they once believed. Regardless of the motives behind contacting a locksmith, home and business owners can benefit from their security services just as much as their emergency services.

Boston Locksmith: Key Cutting is an Art
You probably never even consider your keys until you have either lost one or damaged it in some way. Then you want a locksmith, and you want him in a hurry. Have you ever considered the locksmith to be an artist? Well he has to be to do the job you demand of him (or her in today’s world).
The local locksmith has to have the modern machines that copy keys in seconds. There are several different machine types used today and they are typically the semi-automatic, automatic, code key, and laser key cutter. Some may even have all of them, but how do they work you ask?
The semi-automatic key cutter machine, and it may be the most common, requires the locksmith to place the original key in a vice grip while the duplicate key is placed in another grip. A micrometer traces the outline of the original key and cuts the duplicate key with a high-speed blade. But wait, he’s not finished yet because the machine then goes back over the key to be sure there are no loose spurs of metal. That way the locksmith is certain that the new key is an exact copy.
The automatic key cutting machine does most of the work itself. It first traces the outline of the original key and cuts the duplicate key from the traced outline. Within 20 seconds the automatic key cutting machine makes the duplicate.
The laser key cutting machines works similar to the automatic key cutting machine. The laser cuts the new key with the laser instead of blades like the automatic and semi-automatic.
The code key cutting machine cuts keys in mere seconds with coded key cards. The code key cutting machine copies the notches from the original card, then he inserts a blank card and the duplicate key is made.
So who needs a locksmith? We said the locksmith is an artist and he is. He studied for many years before he could even get his license. The locksmith needs to know how to control and maintain his equipment, and he probably knows the ins and outs of all of the new cutting machines. He can cut and repair any key you give him.
The most important thing you need to know about your locksmith is that you can trust him. You trust him to have keys made to your home, your business, your vehicles, and probably your safes. A reliable locksmith is worth his (or her) weight.
