Locked Out Again

It happened again, you've locked your home or car door and left your keys behind. You have a couple of options to consider, some better than others. Of course there's always the option of breaking into your own home or vehicle which carries with it the risk of having your neighbors contact the police out of fear and having to clean up that mess. As tempting as it might be the more you think about it the more breaking into your own home seems less an option and more of a mistake. Even without having the police called by neighbors you're going to damage or windows which will need replacing. Though you might feel as though desperate times call for desperate measures try to keep in mind that these are your keys that are locked inside your home or vehicle and that calling a locksmith is going to be the best option 99.999% of the time.

When you find yourself locked out of your car and/or vehicle having a trusted locksmith at your side is something you will be very grateful for. The problem is that the majority of the time you find yourself locked out of your home or vehicle you haven't thought of or even contacted a locksmith in at least several years. This thought may make you make you panic and causes some people to contact the first locksmith they either find a phonebook or online. Fortunately good locksmiths aren't difficult to find as a recent study has revealed that over 80% of all locksmith surveyed scored well and were deemed very reliable. You may be tempted to contact and hire the first locksmith you find but taking even a small amount of time to do a bit of research, even on the fly, will help you determine whether or not a locksmith is the right one for you. You'll need to watch out for reviews that show a locksmith charged a client for simply driving to them or changed the price dramatically once they arrived and evaluated the lockout. Other locksmiths still will hold keys and/or vehicle's hostage until they get a specific amount of money out of their client. Fortunately these types of locksmiths are much more uncommon than you might think and are easy to avoid by doing some simple research.

When you're locked out of your home or vehicle you'll also want to make sure that any locksmith you might want to hire offers fare rates. Most locksmiths offer very competitive and fair pricing but even some of the reputable ones charge an unjustified amount of money for their services. For example emergency lock picking in this country ranges from $65 all the way up to $115 though it's not uncommon to find some locksmiths charging over $200 for such services. In some lockout scenarios new deadbolts may be needed and those prices range anywhere from $137 up to $400. Again be wary of any locksmith charges over $400 as it is not difficult to find locksmiths that charge an average of somewhere in the mid-$200 range for deadbolt replacements.

The first thing you want to remember when you lock yourself out of your home or vehicle is that breaking in only serves to damage your property and complicate the issue. Contacting a locksmith is not only safer but far more effective and affordable. Just be sure that you don't panic when you find yourself locked out. Utilize your smart phone, tablet, or even a public phone to make a good educated decision before you hire any locksmith.

Automobile Locksmiths: More Than Meets The Eye

Locking oneself out of an automobile is a much more common occurrence than people realize. Helping automobile owners gain entry into their car when they've left the keys inside is one of the most frequent requests/jobs locksmiths receive. Additionally, it goes without saying that when individuals are locked out of their car they are going to want a locksmith that is immediately available, fairly priced, and sometimes adept at ignition key replacements among other things.

While most automobile lockouts are resolved once a locksmith gets their client back into their car some owners have a bigger problem on their hands. Broken or lost keys may require an ignition key replacement, or even complete car rekeying. Depending on the auto emergency car owners may need one or more of these services. A broken ignition due to an accident or even attempted theft are as ucommon as people often believe which makes having an available locksmith that can address these needs unbelievably invaluable.

Locksmiths are the type of people that most car owners don't think much about until an emergency arises. Scrambling and frantically searching your phone or other smart device for a local locksmith can be a daunting task especially when you're in a hurry, it's after hours, or you're in a strange neighborhood. Couple that with the fact that you may be in an area in which your mobile device cannot get an internet signal. This is why it behooves car owners to seek out a locksmith for any of the aforementioned services not when the need for them but long before a problem arises. With so many locksmiths available in each city around the country automobile owners can spend some time at home researching locksmiths online, calling them to get their questions answered, and build a rapport with those locksmiths they are comfortable with. Having even a very casual relationship established with a locksmith can be very advantageous when the need for one arises and can leave car owners with great peace of mind. Owners of cars should also search for locksmiths in cities they may be traveling to and case the need for one arises there.

While some automobile owners may get lucky when an emergency arises and find a locksmith is capable of meeting the needs and charges a fair price without any hidden fees or bait and switch technique attached, the vast majority of car owners locked out or needing some sort of re-keying or ignition replacement will have a difficult time finding a locksmith in a hurry. The time it takes to find a reputable locksmith online in any city and when you don't need one pales in comparison to the time it takes to find one in emergency.

Locksmith Surveillance Services

If you ask individuals what a locksmith does the vast majority will undoubtedly say that locksmiths help you get into your car or your home when you've lost your keys or accidentally locked yourself out. What many individuals do not realize however is that modern locksmiths do those things but do a lot more as well.

Modern locksmiths not only excel at re-keying locks and getting you into your home or automobile but often specialize in surveillance services as well. These surveillance and security services are often available for both homeowners as well as owners of commercial structures. This is a no-brainer of course as businesses have just as much to protect as do those who own homes.

A modern locksmith can help people/families protect their homes and all their belongings with surveillance equipment such as cameras and even full surveillance systems. Not only will these surveillance systems deter thieves and those who might attempt a robbery but will also earn homeowners and some business owners discounts and rebates on their insurance. In addition to this surveillance systems installed by a locksmith can help parents keep a close eye on nannies, housekeepers, and even children that have been left home alone.

Should you have any questions about our surveillance services or the systems themselves please be sure to contact us so that we may be of assistance.

More Than Just A Keycutter: The Modern Day Locksmith

Unbeknownst to many lay persons, the first locksmiths where metal workers who designed and constructed locks and safes. Every generation after the initial group of locksmiths surfaced was trained to pick locks and crack open safes whenever necessary, though oddly enough, these individuals didn't commit crimes but instead went into business for themselves by becoming security specialists. These days the very best locksmiths are able to crack any lock whether it be old-fashioned or electronic. In fact so talented are modern-day locksmiths that they build, install, and monitor state-of-the-art security system for homes, cars, and businesses.

Whereas in years, decades, even centuries past a locksmiths worked primarily with safes and residential locks, modern locksmiths are quite different. Modern locksmiths usually run their business on a small commercial structure or storefront and it may seem that most of their business comes from having new keys made and selling new locks. The average garden-variety consumer may see a modern-day locksmiths as little more than a salesperson rather than a skilled technician who's capable of lock repair, safe cracking, or giving individuals emergency entrance into their vehicle or home. Locksmith will have no problem showing their quality however once they begin their work.

While in the past locksmiths would simply create keys, sell locks, and of course cracks safes, modern locksmiths often double or moonlight as security consultants. These particular locksmiths are far more than just your ordinary simple key cutters. In fact so talented are these individuals that they often work as both residential and commercial security consultants. Moreover these individuals have the skill to work with state-of-the-art security systems such as electrical locks, keyless entry ways, and a variety of other control systems designed to not only discourage intrusion but presented as well.

Though the average homeowner doesn't ever think about a locksmith until they have an emergency it behooves these people to seek out a locksmith not only for emergencies but for home and business protection as well. State-of-the-art security systems can be installed on not only commercial structures and storefronts but in residential homes as well. Many homeowners are also be pleasantly surprised when they learn that modern locksmiths are often far more affordable and competitively priced than they once believed. Regardless of the motives behind contacting a locksmith, home and business owners can benefit from their security services just as much as their emergency services.

Darn It! I Lost My Car Keys

Do not think it would never happen to you. Even if you are the most careful person you ever know, things like this can happen to anyone. We misplace things for various reasons, and losing car keys are never fun. Maybe your little kids were playing with them, or you were shopping somewhere and set them aside and never noticed you walked out of the store without them, or worst, they are stolen. It is a scary thing. Maybe you simply had a hole in your purse or in your pocket and your key had slipped without you noticing it.

Cars that were made before the 90's had a much easier system that would only require a locksmith making you a new key for the lost or broken one, it would only take a few minutes and just a few dollars. The cars that are build in the last 10 years especially, come with a more complicated security system due to the increased amount of theft everywhere. Your key has a little plastic gadget attached to it. The little black plastic gadget with the buttons that is. It contains a special code that was programmed by your car dealership. This is called transponder chip technology. The transponder chip code comes with the papers you get from the dealership when you purchase your car. Keep this paper somewhere safe. If all goes well and you never lose your key or it never gets stolen, you will probably never need it, nor even think about its existence, which is a good thing.

If your key is broken or lost your only option is to find a reliable local locksmith to replace it for you. But this is only the first part of the problem. When the security system in your car detects a key that does not have the same transponder chip code, your car will not start. On the one hand it's a good thing, because it will stop thieves gaining access to your car; but on the other hand it will make matters a little  difficult for you because reprogramming this code will be costly. When you find a reliable locksmith in your local area, make sure they have expertise in car keys and they also have the machine that reprograms the transponder chip code. If they don't have it, you will have to go to your car dealer and ask them to do this for you. They are more expensive than a locksmith, and they charge by the hour.

When you purchase a car, it would be wise to have a second set of keys at a safe place for your access. This would save you time and money in the long run. If you lose your keys often, than keep a third set of keys somewhere else. Better safe than sorry.

The Professional Locksmith

The professional locksmith has evolved over the years from a part time guy to change your locks and unlock your car when you leave the keys in it, to a polished career that took years to learn. Today many locksmiths also offer home security services, and they set up the entire process.

Yes, they still make keys and repair locks even with the broken key stuck inside. One of the services a locksmith offers is to check your home or business to be sure that burglar will not get back in. You don’t need to wait for the burglar to break in, and remember that old saying that they lock the barn door after the horse ran away.

Not much has changed today, nothing but the locks that have become stronger and far more efficient. Many newer cars have warning devices when a person locks the car with the key still in the ignition, and some even have buttons to lock or unlock the doors. So you may think that the locksmith isn’t called like he was in the past.

To a degree, that may be true, but the locksmith has become a specialist in his field. He understands how a key unlocks the lock. With a few simple tools, he doesn’t need the key, and those same devices when carried by a would be burglar will get arrested before he even uses the tools.

A locksmith relies greatly on return business, and if you wait until an emergency to call him, you may have to pay surcharges if you call in the off-hour. Even though they offer 24-7 services and they may charge mileage if you are outside the city. Just remember, it is his business and you pay for his knowledge.

You can pay for a locksmith to come to your home and/or business and check out your security. He may suggest that you have only one or two master keys and the remaining keys work on individual areas. That way when an employee is no longer employed, you’ll only have to pay for one lock to be replaced.

A modern locksmith will also set up a hidden safe in your home or business. He can repair or replace any parts as well. Often the locksmith has at his disposal key making machines and he can do the repairs or change any locks on the spot.

The best time to check out a locksmith is when you don’t need him, but rest assured, you will need him and probably in the near future.

Choose the Best Lock & Key Expert for Your Business

To find the lock and key expert you should search for the best one in your area in advance, before you need him. You don’t want to choose the expert that has the largest advertisement in the Yellow Pages to come to your business, to make your keys, and even to unlock your safe. You’ll need someone who has a place of business, can give you references, and is licensed, insured and bonded.
However there will be times when you have to call a complete stranger to get you out of a jam. It will probably be the worst time ever, and you may have left your cell phone at home. As you walk to the nearest pay phone, if there are any left in your area, you can still ask him the necessary questions, and investigate him fully later.

You won’t want a novice either. It takes years of training and experience for a Locksmith to learn the trade and if he claims all of the above, still check him out and ask for references. We live in a world where the thief is as knowledgeable as the professional.

How will the best lock and key expert help you in protecting your business? The commercial locksmith will re-key your locks for your business; program your keys; set up a master key for use on all locks in your establishment and have specialized keys for specific areas; he’ll help you with your intercom, alarms, closed circuit television; commercial security systems; and exit devices. In other words the lock and key expert will have the training and certifications to back up all of his claims.

Once you’ve found the exact fit of your locksmith remember he is in business to earn a living. His knowledge and time is what you will pay for. It may take him minutes to fix your problems, and it could have taken hours or days for you to do the job correctly. Remember he has to travel to your place of business, and he has the necessary tools to do the job. Those don’t come cheap either.

Your locksmith will be available seven days a week and twenty-four hours each day. That is worth a great deal when you find your front door smashed and the windows broken. He’ll help you install a new door, and repair broken locks.

When you find the locksmith that is honest, reliable, and knowledgeable, hold on to him because you will need him again.

Don’t Get Ripped Off By Locksmiths

You may think you’ll never need a locksmith, or you’ll never get locked out of your car, especially if the engine’s running or a child or pet is locked inside. Not good situations. Your best bet is to find a local locksmith that is upfront about his char\gees, and before you need him is preferred. Otherwise you may end up paying hundreds of dollars for a simple job.

A locksmith is required by law to be licensed and bonded. He should have proof of the license with him. Most locksmiths work for many years to learn their trade, and an honest locksmith is worth his weight. Don’t be afraid to tell the person on the phone that you’ll call back, and then find someone else in the business. Don’t settle for just anyone.

In an emergency like we’ve mentioned before, when the locksmith answers the phone, ask him his location, and does he charge travel time plus mileage? You shouldn’t have to pay him to drive to your home or location. The charges for the work should be sufficient. Many are not.

Ask first how they charge. Is there a charge for opening the door? Another charge for taking the lock off the door? Then another charge for making the key plus the key itself? See how they can add charge upon charge, and after the fact you will be forced to comply. There are no laws that force a locksmith to charge certain fees.

To help the locksmith to give you a charge over the phone, there are a few questions that you’ll need to answer before you even make the call. What kind of door is the lock on? Is it a wood door, a metal door, or metal or wood jambs? Is the lock a deadbolt?

If you’re calling about your car, they need to know the year, type and model of car. Also they will need the VIN number. You’ll find that on your original papers and insurance papers, or on the car itself. You can find the VIN number on the driver’s side of the windshield, on the lower left side. You’ll also need the license number of your car so he will be able to identify you.

To avoid all of the confusion, you can find out the answers and charges in advance. That is the prudent way of finding a locksmith. At that point call the Better Business Bureau to make sure the locksmith is legitimate. Make the call before you need him.

Boston Locksmith: Key Cutting is an Art

You probably never even consider your keys until you have either lost one or damaged it in some way. Then you want a locksmith, and you want him in a hurry. Have you ever considered the locksmith to be an artist? Well he has to be to do the job you demand of him (or her in today’s world).

The local locksmith has to have the modern machines that copy keys in seconds. There are several different machine types used today and they are typically the semi-automatic, automatic, code key, and laser key cutter. Some may even have all of them, but how do they work you ask?

The semi-automatic key cutter machine, and it may be the most common, requires the locksmith to place the original key in a vice grip while the duplicate key is placed in another grip. A micrometer traces the outline of the original key and cuts the duplicate key with a high-speed blade. But wait, he’s not finished yet because the machine then goes back over the key to be sure there are no loose spurs of metal. That way the locksmith is certain that the new key is an exact copy.

The automatic key cutting machine does most of the work itself. It first traces the outline of the original key and cuts the duplicate key from the traced outline. Within 20 seconds the automatic key cutting machine makes the duplicate.

The laser key cutting machines works similar to the automatic key cutting machine. The laser cuts the new key with the laser instead of blades like the automatic and semi-automatic.

The code key cutting machine cuts keys in mere seconds with coded key cards. The code key cutting machine copies the notches from the original card, then he inserts a blank card and the duplicate key is made.

So who needs a locksmith? We said the locksmith is an artist and he is. He studied for many years before he could even get his license. The locksmith needs to know how to control and maintain his equipment, and he probably knows the ins and outs of all of the new cutting machines. He can cut and repair any key you give him.

The most important thing you need to know about your locksmith is that you can trust him. You trust him to have keys made to your home, your business, your vehicles, and probably your safes. A reliable locksmith is worth his (or her) weight.
